FIRST LADIES COUNTY MATCH OF THE 2016 SEASON
The Cumbria Ladies started their 2016 season where they left off last year, with a resounding win over Staffordshire. The home team’s match was at Lindal, on a green which our ladies played brilliantly to win by 11 games to 1 and by 247 points to 138
Not to be outdone the away team went to Wolstanton Park in Staffordshire and came away with a well deserved win by 7 games to 5 and by 4 points, not easy to do playing away from home and no practice. This gave us an overall win by 113 points.
For the home side there were 5 single figure winners the best of these being Sandra Woods 21- 3 with Kay Baker, Marion Alexander and Julie Gibbons all winning 21-7 and Jess Wernham 21- 8. The best game on the day however had to go to Thelma McBratney who in a very closely fought game came back from 11-5 down to win 21-20. Exceptional bowling by both players made this a joy to watch.
For the away team three players won 21- 10 Jane Glaister, Gillian Balderstone and Pam Newall with Nina Waite 21-11 and Gill Simm 21-12 also scoring valuable points
The next Match will be against North Shropshire with the home team playing at Bowness on May 15th
The ladies would like to thank Lindal Bowling club for the use of their green and for providing the refreshments the markers and measurers, and Julia Stevens who refereed exceptionally well all day . Finally our grateful thanks go to our sponsors A. HoldensLtd and Princess Kitchens of Barrow for their kind support of Cumbria Ladies Bowling Team.
Cumbria Ladies Bowling Association held their Merit and Champion of Champions Qualifier on Saturday 16th April at Glaxo Bowling Club Ulverston. The event was fairly well attended with some new faces taking part, Jackie Nevins, Doreen Cornthwaite and Karen McPake, and there was some excellent bowling on a beautiful sunny day. Results of the four quarter finals were VI Dennison 21 Marion Birkbeck 13, Emma Thornton 21 Doreen Cornthwaite 15, Jane Glaister 21 Karen McPake11, Marion Woods 21 Sandra Rigg 19. The semi finals saw Emma Thornton beat Vi Dennison to 15 and Marion Woods defeat Jane Glaister to 19 setting up a final between Emma and Marion. The final could have gone either way with some excellent bowling from both competitors with Emma taking the victory to 17 at the end. This was Emma’s 3rd consecutive victory in this event and it was well deserved on the day and once again she will represent Cumbria at the Champion of Champions competition at the Waterloo Hotel Blackpool in September. Thanks go to Glaxo Bowling Club for the use of their green and facilities on the day and also to Doreen for making sure we were all able to get a brew after our games!!

The last singles in January was held at Newdale on sunday, in conditions that favoured ducks more than bowlers. Again the group format was used, with 12 players split into 4 groups.
